New Feature: Import, Export & Back Up Your OpenClaw Agents

We just shipped one of our most requested features — you can now export a full snapshot of your OpenClaw agent and import it to spin up a new one in seconds. Whether you're migrating from a local setup, switching cloud providers, or just want a backup, it's now a couple of clicks away.

How it works

Exporting an agent

When your agent is running, you'll see a new Export button in the controls section of your dashboard (next to Stop and Restart). Clicking it downloads a .tar.gz archive containing your agent's entire OpenClaw configuration directory — that includes your openclaw.json settings, workspace files, installed skills, and any customizations you've made.

The archive is a standard tarball. You can inspect it, store it, version-control it, or share it with a teammate.

Importing an agent

Next to the "+ New Agent" button on your dashboard, you'll now find an Import Agent button. Click it to open the import panel, where you:

  1. Upload a .tar.gz config archive (up to 10 MB)
  2. Pick a plan — BYOK or Managed, same as a fresh deploy
  3. Choose your AI model — Claude, GPT, Gemini, Kimi, or Claude Sonnet
  4. Enter an API key if you're on BYOK
  5. Name your agent and hit Import & Deploy

Clawly provisions a fresh container, applies your imported config on top, and patches in the new agent's credentials automatically. Your agent boots up with all your previous settings, skills, and workspace intact.

Use cases

Migrate from your local machine to the cloud

If you've been running OpenClaw on your personal computer and want it always-on, just tar up your ~/.openclaw/ directory and import it into Clawly. Your agent picks up right where it left off — same personality, same skills, same workspace — but now it's running 24/7 without keeping your laptop open.

tar czf my-agent-config.tar.gz -C ~/.openclaw .

Upload that file in the import panel and you're done.

Move between cloud providers

Already hosting on another platform and want to switch to Clawly? Export your config from wherever it's running, import it here. The archive format is just a standard OpenClaw config directory — nothing proprietary.

Going the other way works too. If you ever want to leave Clawly and self-host again, export your agent and extract it into ~/.openclaw/ on any machine with OpenClaw installed.

Back up before making changes

About to experiment with a new skill or reconfigure your agent's channels? Export first. If something breaks, import the backup and you're back to a known-good state in under a minute.

What's included in the export

The archive contains everything under your agent's OpenClaw config directory:

  • openclaw.json — all agent settings, channel config, model preferences, gateway config
  • workspace/ — any files your agent has created or been given
  • Installed skills and plugins

Credentials (API keys, bot tokens) are present in the exported config. Treat the archive like you would any file containing secrets — don't post it publicly.

On import, Clawly automatically patches the config with fresh credentials for the new agent (new gateway token, new OpenRouter API key for managed plans), so stale keys from the export don't cause issues.

Get started

Head to your dashboard and try it out. Export is available on any running agent, and import is right next to the new agent button.
